Top seeds advance in Southern Section lacrosse playoffs

All but one of the top four seeds in each bracket advanced Tuesday in the opening round of the US Lacrosse high school playoffs.

The biggest upset came in the L.A. County bracket, with No. 13 seed Thousand Oaks rallying to beat No. 4 Crespi 13-12 after trailing 8-5 at halftime. Crespi was coming off a tough overtime loss to Harvard-Westlake on Monday. Coincidentally, Harvard-Westlake, seeded sixth, also was upset Tuesday, falling to No. 11 Mira Costa 13-8.

In the Orange County bracket, No. 12 Newport Harbor upset No. 5 St. Margaret’s Episcopal 8-7, and No. 10 Santa Margarita beat No. 7 Great Oak 7-2 for the only upsets according to seed.

The L.A. County semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, with the final on May 9.

Orange County semifinals are Saturday at Aliso Niguel (5 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.), and the final will be played Wednesday, May 9, at Dana Hills (7:30 p.m.).

The U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section High School Championship game, with the Orange County winner facing the L.A. County winner, will be played May 12 at Mission Viejo (1 p.m.).
