Southern Section playoff pairings announced

While some teams still haven’t finished their regular seasons, the schedule and pairings for the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section playoffs came out Sunday, with Palos Verdes (16-2) earning the No. 1 seed and Palisades Charter (13-3) the No. 2 seed.

Harvard-Westlake

Harvard-Westlake will be home to two big games back-to-back this week.

For Crespi (11-2) and Harvard-Westlake (9-3), the No. 4 and No. 6 seeds, respectively, Tuesday’s playoff openers come one day after the teams meet in their final Mission League game, with the league title still in play. Harvard-Westlake (7-1 Mission), which won the league last year, can win the 2012 title outright with a victory. The Wolverines beat Crespi 18-13 in early March.

However, a win by Crespi (5-2 Mission) would create a three-way tie for the league title with Loyola (11-2, 5-2 Mission), which is seeded fifth in the playoff bracket. Either way, both teams are going to have to bounce back strong from Monday’s game or risk being bounced from the playoffs early.

Other observations from the bracket: Third-seeded Westlake (14-1, 13-0) is one of five teams from the 101 Coast league in the 16-team tournament. The Bay League also received five spots, the Mission League three and there was one spot each for the City League (Palisades), the Condor League (Thacher, 7-5) and independent Chadwick (9-0).
