A couple of interesting prep games on tap this weekend as we head into the final few weeks of the regular season:
Loyola (8-2, 4-2 Mission League) at Palisades Charter (12-1, 5-0 City League): Palisades doesn’t get tested much in the City League, winning by scores of 17-2, 16-0, 16-3, 15-1 and 11-2, so the Dolphins make an effort to schedule strong nonleague games. This is one, with Loyola contending for the Mission League title after winning at Harvard-Westlake on Tuesday. Palisades beat H-W 11-4 back in early March, and its only loss is to No. 1-ranked Palos Verdes, though that one was 16-2. Nevertheless, these are two of the stronger teams in the north side of the Southern Section.
Westlake (12-1, 11-0 101 League) at Mailbu (9-2, 7-2 101 League): Westlake leads the 101 League by two games over Malibu and has a game in hand with a 13-7 win in their first meeting. Both are top 20 in the laxpower.com Southern Section rankings.
Crespi (8-2, 4-2 Mission) at Oaks Christian (6-6, 5-6 101 League): Oaks as dropped three in a row in league and has a tough matchup with Malibu next week, making this matchup with Crespi an interesting one. The Celts have a lot of offensive firepower, with attacks Jack Vonarb (38 goals) and Kyle Radenberg (33). Early in the season they seemed to be playing too fast and wound up with a lot of turnovers. But they’ve won six in a row and are averaging more than 12 goals in that stretch.
Harvard-Westlake (7-3, 4-1 Mission) at Brentwood (2-5, 1-4 Mission): This one is interesting if only because H-W is coming off its loss to Loyola that created a three-way race in the Mission League and the Wolverines only beat Brentwood 8-7 in their first meeting. But Brentwood is coming off an 18-6 loss to Crespi, which was preceded by a 5-4, 4 OT loss to The Chadwick School of Palos Verdes.
What games did I miss? Let me know.
