It’s week three in the MCLA, and it appears every local team is in action, some of them twice. With more than a dozen games Saturday and Sunday, there’s no excuse not to check out some of the action.
Saturday’s marquee matchup features No. 11-ranked UC Santa Barbara, coming off an overtime loss at Stanford, traveling to San Luis Obispo to face No. 5 Cal Poly.
If that’s too much of a drive, there are plenty of games closer to home, including a matchup of ranked Division II teams with No. 12 St. Mary’s visiting No. 8 Concordia-Irvine.
It will be Concordia’s first regular-season game after scrimmages with UCLA (a 9-6 win) and Chapman (a 15-6 loss). Concordia has an interesting story brewing with goalie Kelly McMinn, who played three years at VMI after graduating from JSerra Catholic. Now, with one year of eligibility remaining, he’s playing for his dad, coach Will McMinn, and anchoring the defense for a top-10 team.
Sunday, UC Santa Barbara is home to No. 13 California in what looks like the best D-I game, and St. Mary’s visits No. 11 Cal-State Fullerton in a meeting of ranked D-II teams.
