The Rinks in Huntington Beach once again will be hopping with box lacrosse this weekend, when the champions from the LA Box Lacrosse League take on the winners from the 3d San Diego Box Lacrosse League beginning Saturday at noon.
The LA Box Lacrosse League crowned its champions last Sunday in Torrance, with league director Chris Jewett of Leverage lacrosse providing these details:
High School Varsity
Beach Head, coached by Lane Jaffe and made up primarily of players from Peninsula HS, took the title over a Cubs team from Loyola HS. “Very exciting team to watch play,” Jewett said, “a well coached, scrappy group of players.” The title game was tied at 3-3 after one, 6-6 after two and 9-9 with under three minutes to play. Beach Head took a 10-9 lead at about the two-minute mark, then put in a final goal in transition off a Cubs miss to win 11-9. Here’s a full-length video of the game:
High School JV
The Cubs out of Loyola HS, coached by Bret Tietjen, went undefeated in the league and faced Beach Head in the title game. Beach Head kept it close in the first period, but the Cubs pulled away in periods two and three.
Legion, made up of boys from West LA and Culver City and coached by Jim Lucas, came in undefeated and kept their record perfect with a win over the Leverage A team. Legion jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.
Leverage Lacrosse, coached by Joe Marinelli, capped its box season with a title after a summer season in which it reached the finals of both the Battle of LA and Silverfin Invitational tournament.
Saturday, those champions will face the San Diego champions. Those winners can be found here. 3d Green, which appears to be primarily Poway HS players, took the varsity title and will play Beach Head. Lax.com has video highlights of that game:
