Inside Lacrosse released its preseason MCLA rankings Tuesday, and there’s a definite Southern California feel near the top. While defending champion Colorado State took the No. 1 spot — unanimously — and Arizona State and Brigham Young were second and third, the next three represent the Southland.
Chapman is rated No. 4, UC Santa Barbara No. 5 and Cal-Poly SLO No. 6. Chapman finished last season 16-5 with a berth in the MCLA national tournament. Santa Barbara finished 13-4 and also advanced to the MCLA tourney. Cal Poly, meanwhile, advanced to the MCLA national title game before falling to Colorado State and finishing the season 21-2.
All three teams open 2013 play in the next few weeks, with Santa Barbara playing host to USC this weekend (Sat., Jan. 26, 2 p.m. PT) and Cal Poly playing host to Santa Barbara on Feb. 9 (1 p.m. PT). Chapman scrimmages MCLA D-II Concordia (Irvine) on Feb. 1 then opening its regular season at home against University of San Diego on Feb. 15.
Concordia, by the way, is ranked No. 8 in the MCLA D-II preseason poll. Cal-State Fullerton is No. 15. Concordia is scheduled to scrimmage at UCLA this Saturday (Jan. 26, 1 p.m. PT) and again at Chapman on Feb. 1 before opening its regular season against St. Mary’s on Feb. 9 at Sage Hill School in Newport Beach (1 p.m.).
Fullerton opens its season Feb. 2 against San Diego State at Fallbrook HS (2 p.m. PT)
