This year’s camp looks to continue the success of last year’s inaugural event, as coaches David Jenkins, a former University of Virginia national champion and eight-year pro with the Boston Cannons; Chris Jewett, the 2011 Bay League Coach of the Year at Mira Costa High School and Leverage Lacrosse founder and director; and Sean Allen, an assistant coach of the 2009 and 2011 Canadian National Champion Team Ontario, hope to help SoCal players improve their lacrosse skills.
The camp will emphasize stick skills, especially shooting and feeding in tight spaces, and will feature-box specific elements that transfer into the field game.
“3d Lacrosse wholeheartedly believes in box lacrosse as a training tool for both box and field play,” Jenkins said, emphasizing how the advanced stick skills of many Division I Canadian players with a background in box lacrosse give them a leg up on the competition. The camp will help both offensive and defensive players, as dodging, catching and throwing with tight coverage can help both attacking goal scorers and clearing defensemen and midfielders.
Unlike 3d’s Ontario Box Immersion Camp, which this summer had about 85 players ranging from sixth grade to college age, the SoCal camp will have one division for players in grades 3-8 and another for high school players. Each session expects to host around 30 players to allow for maximum number of repetitions for each player. Jenkins is excited about this year’s program and hopes that many of last year’s players will return with their skills much improved after playing a box lacrosse season with Leverage, allowing the camp to cover more advanced techniques and drills.
